The Midnight Library I Story By Dhyana
Maya

On the last night of summer holiday, right before school started again, 12 years old Maya was helping sort out things in a big wooden cupboard. That’s when she found it: a tiny brass key shaped like a sleeping fox. It was small enough to fit in her palm, and when she picked it up, the key felt strangely warm, as if someone had just been holding it. There was no lock in the house that matched it. Maya slipped the key in her pocket, and almost forgot about it until, exactly 12:12 a.m. Her phone glowed with the time and exactly the second her eyes fell on the key as it started to glow in the colour of mango ice-cream. A golden one appeared on the bed. like someone had drawn a secret door with light. She stretched her hand to it and pushed. The wall opened like a page turning. On the other side was a library. But not a normal one. Books floated instead of being on shelves.
Library

The shelves were twisted like a branch on a tree. A cold breeze. blew. Instead of a ceiling there was an endless night sky full of purple and silver stars. The air was cold. and the ground was covered with frost. Before Maya could understand
anything, an owl came from the shelf and sat on Maya’s shoulder. He said
you’re late. ‘We are on page ’47. Page 47 of what?’ Maya asked. trying not to sound too shocked. The book that hasn’t finished yet. ‘Which Book?’ Maya asked curiously. It’s
YOUR BOOK. The owl said.
Maya laughed nervously. She said ‘I don’t have any book. I am just me’ You are not the owl replied. Anyone who enters this magical library gets one book. But only keep it with yourself if you finished the first part before sunrise. If you cannot, the library will take the book back-and the door gets smaller each night, and you don’t return. Before she could reply a book came floating from the ceiling and on her head. It was nothing but had written something on it with silver bold words The Midnight Library- by Maya. She opened it, but the first page was blank. Then words appeared in a bad handwriting. There was written : Maya stood in the library. She was scared but excited. Suddenly, she….
Maya closed her book and asked
‘What is happening here?’

The owl said if you delay writing a book the door will get closed quickly. She looked back and saw the door shrinking.
Unfinished Stories
She wrote quickly: A friendly silver fox appeared and said, “I’m The Keeper of Unfinished Stories. Want to see the coolest part of the library! And suddenly a fox came and licked gently and said follow me. She followed the fox and she saw a door. She was astonished to see that. The fox said open it. Maya went forward to open the door. When she opened the door she saw her grandpa sitting there. Her grandpa looked at her and smiled. The fox began to speak: Your grandpa also came here 15 years ago, but he could not complete his story so he could not escape. Maya was scared but now the fox and owl were her best secret friends’ As the real sky outside turned pale pink (visible through the shrinking doorway). Maya wrote the last lines: Even though she had to go before the sun rose, Maya knew she would return every night. Because some stories are good to leave unfinished. And some keys are too special to ever lose. The book glowed bright golden and softly white and words settled neatly. The owl flapped once. The story was accepted. But remember- you may keep the key with yourself, but don’t come regularly because the door gets smaller every night. Use it wisely, author.
Maya came back through the golden line. The light falls on her eyes and she woke up with the key in her hands glowing warm gold She smiled and kept the key inside her cupboard.
New Adventures
The schools had started-Math’s test, cricket, lunch with friends but she had a big secret about The Midnight Library! Somewhere behind the walls in the library the books kept floating and the owl waiting, Maya was now all ready for the new adventures.
