The Hotel’s Newest Guest
The hotel stood beyond the isolated mysterious forest in northern Romania, where the path ended at a locked massive iron gate. It’s windows dark except one faint light on the eleventh floor. She went there after her train was cancelled, unaware that she had already been expected.
Inside, the air felt sealed, as though it had never been disturbed in centuries. The lobby’s dim lights, but there were no shadows moving beneath them. The walls were always bare except for framed photographs, dozens of them, each of them showing a different guest standing in the same lobby. The receptionist stood behind the desk without greeting her, his expression blank, as if he had been waiting mid-thought. He handed her a brass key engraved with 713 and, without asking, lifted a camera and took her photograph. There were no forms to sign, no questions asked. The elevator did not work, so she climbed the stairs alone. The eleventh-floor hallway was too long for the size of the building, stretching farther than it should have. The carpet muted her footsteps completely. The doors along the corridor had numbers like 11;10, 11;12, 11;13, 11;14. There was no 11;11. When she stepped into her room which had a really strong fragrance of mystery, the first thing she noticed was the mirror facing the door. It reflected the bed, the window, the wardrobe but for a fraction of a second, it did not reflect her. The curtains were stiff with frost from the inside. The room felt colder than the hallway. In the bedside drawer, she found a freshly printed photograph of herself taken moments ago. On the back were four words written in faded ink: She opened it anyway. At 12:03 a.m, three slow knocks echoed through the door. Then, from the other side, a whisper spoke her name in her exact voice, saying “ You’re late “.
By morning, the corridor outside her room was empty. The staircase no longer led to the lobby. On the wall near the entrance, a new framed photograph had appeared, dated that night. She was grinning in it.
