Grey Horizons

The sky had turned an angry shade of grey, as though darkened by Zeus’s fury. In the distance, the hull of the Nemesis groaned beneath the assault of the sea, while a dozen hands fought to secure the mast, desperately trying to keep the dying ship afloat.

I ignored the fire spreading through my arms as I pulled the oars through the churning water. The tiny rescue boat could hold only three people. So far, it carried just one.

Me.

“Where Are You Going, Thomas?” The howling wind almost swallowed Martha’s voice, but I still heard the fear in it. I could see the chaos of the sea in her wide, grey eyes as her boat drifted further away from mine.

“Father.”

It was the only word I could manage, barely louder than a whisper. Every ounce of my strength had been spent forcing the little boat back towards the doomed ship, but I refused to turn around.

The oars nearly slipped out of my numb hands as a wave nearly knocked me over. Freezing, salt water sprayed onto my face. Spluttering and spitting, I caught a glimpse of the ship as a strike of lightning illuminated the darkness like the ghost ships in the stories I grew up hearing.

Another wave crashed over me, lifting me just enough to catch another glimpse of the Nemesis, this time clearly. The once glorious ship was now in ruins, tipping at a terrifying angle. Every groan felt like a cry for help; screams were overpowered by the waves. The sails were ripped to shreds, and the deck was littered with splintered timbers.

A wave the size of a house crashed over the ship, and two terrified screams cut through the chaos as two men were tossed overboard. In the hopes of finding father, I rushed to the spot where two men were screaming and desperately surviving. 

“Get on you two, we haven’t had much time”

“Thanks, lad,” the two men managed as they climbed aboard. A wave of sadness flooded over me; not one of them was Father.

“Thomas!”

I knew that voice.

I looked up to see Father standing on the slanted deck, one hand clutching the railing as another reached towards me. Even through the rain, I could make out the tired smile on his face.

“I’m here!” I shouted, pulling harder at the oars.

Then the sea answered before he could.

A monstrous wave crashed between us, swallowing the Nemesis whole. When the water settled, Father was gone.

Dawn arrived hours later, but the storm had taken more than a ship that night. It had taken the last glimpse I would ever have of my father.

Even now, whenever thunder rolls across the sea, I still search the waves, hoping—just for a moment—to see him standing there again.
