‘An Imperfectly Perfect Day’ Story by 8 year old Bookosmian from Bangalore

It was new year! The sun rays glistened on the floor of my room; the light fell on my eyes as if it was trying to wake me up. I had no mind to get up early. Infact, I wanted to have a good sleep as long as I wanted to. As, I tried to shake the light off my eyes, I looked at the calendar. On no!! Today was the day my friends were coming, and I hadn’t even gotten out of bed.

I quickly brushed my teeth, combed my hair, took a quick shower and ran to my living room, my heart beating fast. I was praying with all my heart, hoping with all my soul that my friends shouldn’t be here. I needed to keep my room in a tip top shape for my sleep over. When I was done, I went to the living room, happy that my prayers had been answered, and just when I sat down on the sofa, my legs paining after running around so much, the doorbell rang. I rushed to the door and opened it. Yay!!! There they were… My dearest friends… It was time for fun!!!

We were so happy. We talked for a long time, while my mother made our sandwiches. We had a lot to catch up on. My mother served us sandwiches. We ate our sandwiches hungrily and ran into the room. I was so happy as this was my first sleepover ever and it would be my best. But, when you expect too much, sometimes things don’t go your way. I ran to my brothers’ room and we all decided to read our favorite books to each other. I walked to the bookshelf and opened it. I looked for my favorite book ‘The naughtiest girl is a monitor’ from the Enid Blyton series. I pulled it out and read it. When, I had just read half of the story, my brother came there and shouted at me. “Don’t come to my room. I am studying.” I stayed back to fight with him, but my friends just pulled me with them. I was so annoyed.

As I completed the book, my mother said that we could go out for a movie. When we reached there, the signboard said that it would only open at 5PM and it was just morning. “What would we do till then”, I thought. “Anagha!!!!”, one of my friends called seeing my disappointed face. “ We can go to the playground and have fun”, she said. I loved the idea and happily dreamt of having loads of fun. But, as we got there, it started to rain. I was so disappointed. “Don’t worry”, my mother said. “We can go home and play loads of games and have fun”. But all the time we played and laughed; I wasn’t enjoying at all. I was dreaming about all the fun we could have had if the rain hadn’t come.

“Dumb rain”, I thought to myself. I was so upset. But I heard one of my friends whispering to me. “Hey!! I know what you are thinking about. Don’t worry. If you stop worrying about what is going to happen and focus on what is happening now, you will be happier”, she said. At first, I did not believe her. But I thought I needed to try it. I concentrated on the games and had a lot of fun. We ordered burgers, fries, pizzas and all kinds of junk food. There were many people at home. Me, my friends and my brother were the happiest. We loved an excuse to have a lot of fun. When lunch was done, it had stopped raining!  Me and my friends went out to play in the park. When we came back, our throats were parched. We drank some mango juice and ate biscuits.

The sleepover was long. We played pillow fight game, truth or dare, watched a movie, went to park, had dinner and had a midnight feast. I enjoyed it a lot as I was not thinking about what would happen next. I had learnt a very important lesson. We should have fun at each and every moment of our life and not dream about what will happen next. You might only get that moment or opportunity once in a lifetime.
