A landscape of sorrow | Poem by Aarna, 11, Gurgaon

What do you think we should do to save the earth? Aarna, 11 from Gurgaon, writes a beautiful poem about rebirth as a possibility.

dry earth sad kids poem bookosmia

With the first drop of dew,

Starting my day anew,

Feeling the tremors of cold,

Remembering stories left untold,

I gaze out of the wooden window,

Where the cows sleep under the tree’s shadow.

Mountains echo the songs of pain,

Craving to be touched by the wind and rain,

Trees grow older with withering trunks,

The majestic lake that has now shrunk,

An existence lying at the mercy of time,

Imploring humans to cease their crimes.

My window shows me the horrors of tomorrow,

A landscape of emptiness, full of deep sorrow,

Parched lands begging for a drop of water,

Trees brought down by rampant slaughter,

Mountains are waiting for the winds from the east,

Tigers languish, longing for a feast.

Woodpeckers perch on tattered barks,

Oceans bereaved from the thunder of the sharks,

The sun flares with the fire of rage,

It’s time to write the future on a new page,

Human actions have created ruin and wrath,

Our deeds have led us on a devastating path.

We burned the trees and forests for greed,

But this couldn’t satiate our incessant needs.

We hunted down the bears for fun,

And killed the birds with a shot of the gun,

We dug the earth and damaged the soil,

And spilt the oceans with poisonous oil.

In return, we received the fury of nature,

Volcanoes bursting lava from the crater,

Tsunamis in seas drowning us with their might,

The animals watching our pitiful sight,

Earthquakes threaten to engulf our race,

Thunder and lightning roar down from space.

The mighty human weakened by the creator,

A reminder, that there exists a power much greater,

A power that can erase the human race,

And rebuild the world into a beautiful place,

For Mother Earth must be showered with love and care,

Or else the human race will live in sorrow and despair.
