The Willow Tree I Story By Avika

The Willow Tree

At dawn, the willow tree watches the forest wake, the gentle sunlight filtering through its delicate leaves, drooping like heavy curtains, casting golden flecks across the moist forest floor. It quietly listens to the gentle murmur of the creek beside it, the forest ever so peaceful before the daily chaos, while creatures slowly stir to begin their day.

By midday, the forest turns into its own kind of living whir, and the Willow stands still, soaking it all in. Ants travel up and down its trunk in slightly wobbly lines, their tiny feet gently tapping against the rough bark like a steady drumbeat. Birds scatter through the branches above, filling the surrounding atmosphere with their restless music while small creatures rustle through the greenery below searching for food to satisfy their hunger. The willow too has its own struggles, the harsh winds tugging and irritating its long and flowing leaves, heavy rains soaking and dragging its branches low and the building ache of roots being trampled underneath human steps. However, pain is not all it knows: the cool shade it casts over the ever-flowing, gentle creak, the soft brushing of butterfly wings against its luscious, ethereal leaves and the warmth of the soft sunlight sinking into its very being.

If the tree possessed the ability to communicate with the forest, it would say, “I thank you for having me here; the fertile soil, land and environment you provided for me were priceless, and I give you myself as payment. We are one of the few communities left untouched to be bathed in our own beauty, and I say it’s time we expand. All creatures, big and small, have contributed; they take rest within my shade, and I am ever grateful to you and them for everything.”
