The Liquid Density Experiment

Im going to share with you all a science experiment that I recently tried at home.

Materials Required:

  1. Measuring cup
  2. Test tube
  3. Stirring stick
  4. Red food colour
  5. Yellow food colour
  6. Water
  7. Oil
  8. Honey

Procedure:

  1. First pour 10 ml of honey into the test tube.
  2. Then add 15 ml of water into the test tube.
  3. Next add two drops of red colour
  4. Next, pour 10 ml of oil into the test tube.
  5. Lastly add two drops of yellow colour.
  6. Gently stir the mixture using a stirring stick.
  7. Wait for 2–3 minutes and observe what happens.

Observation:

After a few minutes, you will see the liquid separate into different layers:

  • Honey at the bottom
  • Water forms middle layer
  • Oil on top

Conclusion:  This happens because honey is the heaviest and oil is the lightest.

FAQs – The Liquid Density Experiment

What is this experiment about?
This experiment shows how different liquids form layers based on their density.

Why do the liquids not mix completely?
Because each liquid has a different density, they settle in separate layers instead of mixing.

Which liquid is the heaviest?
Honey is the heaviest, which is why it settles at the bottom.

Which liquid is the lightest?
Oil is the lightest, so it floats on top.

Why is food colouring added?
Food colouring helps make the layers more visible and easier to observe.

Can I use other liquids for this experiment?
Yes! You can try liquids like syrup, milk, or juice to see how they layer differently.

Is stirring necessary?
Gentle stirring helps the liquids settle, but too much stirring can mix them.

What will happen if I shake the test tube?
The liquids may mix temporarily, but after some time, they will separate again into layers.

Is this experiment safe to do at home?
Yes, it is safe with adult supervision.

What do we learn from this experiment?
We learn about density and how different substances behave when combined.

Where can I buy books?
