The Last Wish

Chapter 1: Together

Thomas, a German man, and Alifiya, an Italian woman, had been a happy couple for over four years. Today was Alifiya’s birthday: the 14th of February. As a special gift, Thomas handed her a mysterious envelope. “Do not open it until I tell you to,” he told her seriously. Alifiya nodded, answering in a calm voice, “Okay.”

Chapter 2: Sent Away

They lived together in the city of Berlin. Everything changed on the night of March 15th, when war broke out between Italy and Germany. While they were sleeping, a loud, ear-piercing alarm siren began to wail through the streets. Thomas bolted upright, realizing the danger immediately. He rushed to wake Alifiya.

“The war has started!” he shouted over the noise. “Follow me, let’s get to the underground bunker quickly!”

After two long, boring days, the bombing finally stopped. When they emerged from the bunker, the sunlight was so blindingly bright it hurt their eyes—it was a major problem in the scorching heat of the city. Suddenly, a booming announcement played over the speakers: all men over thirty must fight for the country.

Thomas was heartbroken, but he had no choice. A few days later, he began packing his bags. He only had a few hours before he had to leave. Alifiya watched him, her heart heavy. She didn’t want her friend to go. Before he left, she gave him the biggest hug she could and held on tightly, wishing they could spend more time together. . A few hours later, he marched away to fight for his country.

Chapter 3: The War

When Thomas arrived at the base, he was handed heavy weapons. He didn’t have the slightest clue how to use these dangerous machines .He geared up with heavy grenades and gripped a five-kilogram gun, standing with a thousand other soldiers who were willing to sacrifice for Germany.

The war began, and Thomas was loaded into a helicopter with a group of brave soldiers. When they dropped onto the battlefield minutes later, Thomas was trembling. He could hear the terrifying boom of bombs, the crackle of gunshots, and the shouts of soldiers crying out in agony or fear.

As they marched toward the combat zone, they were led by the German Colonel—the same man who had made the announcement in Berlin. In the centre of the group walked Thomas, an innocent man caught in the middle of it all.

Suddenly, an enemy soldier began rushing toward the Colonel. The Colonel noticed him right away and quickly signaled for his team to take cover. The soldier was stopped before he could reach them.

The Colonel then turned to the group and said calmly, “This is a difficult time, my friends. We must stay brave, work together, and look out for one another.”

Chapter 4: Devastation at Home

Back in Berlin, Alifiya could think of nothing but Thomas. She kept the television on, watching the news reports about the war. The only thing she had left of him was the mysterious letter with the big red stamp. Even though she was tempted, she remembered his words and kept it sealed. She sat on her soft white couch and sobbed, whispering, “Please come back, please come back,” repeatedly.

Chapter 5: Danger Strikes

While Thomas’s group was taking big strides across the field, disaster struck. An airstrike hit them, a sudden attack scattered everyone in different directions. Thomas felt a sharp pain as a bullet hit his right leg. He tried to crawl away, but he was knocked unconscious by an enemy soldier.

When he finally opened his eyes, he was in a guarded room with the rest of his group. The ruthless soldiers tried to frighten them with harsh words. The Colonel stood tall and growled, “We will always be stronger than you.!”

Furious, the enemy leader gave an order, and Thomas’s friends were separated from him and taken away. Thomas called out to them, but there was nothing he could do. He felt scared, worried, and frustrated, yet he tried to stay strong.

Soon, the soldiers led Thomas away from the others. They escorted him to a quiet, lonely building far from the camp.

Chapter 6: First Chance

Thomas saw his chance. He bravely grabbed a rifle and fired to protect his friends. The enemy soldiers ran away, and everyone was safe. Thomas’s heart raced as he realized how frightening and serious a battle could be.

With his leg throbbing and bleeding, he began the long, five-kilometre limp back to the main army base. It took him from morning until night, using every bit of his courage. By the time he reached the base, he had lost a lot of blood and needed immediate medical attention.

Chapter 7: Success

After he was treated, Thomas was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery. He felt extremely proud. Before heading home, he wrote a quick letter to Alifiya:

I love you very much. I may be away for a while, but please keep me in your heart. If you haven’t opened the letter yet, please don’t. Wait until I return home, and then we will open it together.

Chapter 8: The Return

Eight days after the incident, Thomas finally left the base to return to Berlin. From the helicopter, he looked down at the peaceful green grass and the tall buildings of the city. But just a few kilometres away, a missile hit the helicopter and brought it crashing down.

Back at the house, the doorbell rang. When Alifiya opened it, she saw a soldier holding a wooden bowl. “Ma’am, I am so sorry,” he said softly. “Your friend, Thomas, has passed away.”

Alifiya fell to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. Seeing his military hat and his Medal of Honor only made her cry harder.

Chapter 9: Realization

Through her tears, she finally reached for the letter. She broke the red seal and opened it. Inside, she found a beautiful, shimmering golden ring and a note that read:

“My beloved Alifiya, will you marry me?”
