Chandigarh is a beautiful city in the Northern part of India. It is a Union Territory and is also the capital city of two states, Punjab and Haryana. There are many places to visit in Chandigarh, like the Rose Garden, Sukhna Lake, the Rock Garden and other beautiful places around. Therefore it is known as “The City of Greens and Gardens”.
Last Sunday, I went to visit the Rock Garden with my parents. Just in front of the entrance gate, there is a huge rock with engravings which reads as, “Rock Garden Fantasy created by Shri Nek Chand, dedicated to the spirit of Creativity by the people of India”. Everything was made up of small pieces of rocks, walls, dolls, plastic figures of dogs and peacock feathers etc. Some of them were made up of colourful broken bangles, broken floor tiles and broken switches too.
As we moved ahead, we came across a huge waterfall. The view from that spot was very beautiful, and many people were taking photos there. Next to this place was a big amphitheatre with a big TV screen which was screening a film on how Shri Nek Chand worked hard to make such a public masterpiece. Next we came to an area where we saw an aquarium section showcasing fishes of different species, colours and sizes. The section further on showed ‘laughing mirrors’, where we could laugh watching our funny reflections in mirrors. There were swings, too, which made the trip more fun. We also saw the room where Shri Nek Chand used to work. The equipment used by him is also kept there.
I can’t imagine how much time, and hard work he put into making such a beautiful piece of work. He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1984. I feel grateful for his brilliance, and for adding to the beauty of Chandigarh with his genius.
