My Trip to Meghalaya

The one thing that I always look forward to is travel. So, after my final examinations in March, when my parents announced that we will be travelling to Meghalaya, I was extremely excited. Meghalaya literally means ‘abode of the clouds’.  It is one of the seven sister states of north-east India. A state known for its natural beauty consisting of hills, forests, waterfalls and clean air. The best time to visit Meghalaya is from October to April, when the weather is pleasant and dry. On the day of our journey, we woke up early in the morning to make it to the airport and got on our ATR flight from Kolkata to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. From there we drove to our first hotel called Ri Kynjai, which in the Khasi language means ‘serenity by the lake’.

Now, I get hungry all the time, and when I am hungry, I keep bothering my parents over and over again to get me food, hence I went to the restaurant and had the best chicken spring rolls of my life. After I was full, I went up to the room and was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the view- mountains, greenery, lakes. It looked so wonderful. My parents were busy clicking pictures of the beautiful surroundings, while I was sitting on the balcony and enjoying the view. After sitting around for a while, we went to the Umami Lake for a boat ride. The boatsmen quoted 2500 Rupees for a 2-minute ride! The price was quite exorbitant, so we pooled with some other people and went on the boat ride. The experience and the view were great and a lot of fun.

Next day after eating breakfast, we were on the move again, this time heading to a place called Tripura castle. Since there was not really anything much to do in the castle, we did a quick walk around and then headed for shopping. However, for the first part of this shopping spree it was raining very heavily, and we were not carrying an umbrella. We sat in a café and waited for the rain to stop. After some more walking, we found this place called to women’s market, where primarily women were selling things like clothes and crafts. That’s where we did most of the shopping. For some reason, my father absolutely raided the school supplies stall and my mother who usually gets a lot of stuff, barely got anything. We also found this stall where they made fridge magnets and badges, so I got a few badges that had pictures of me and my dog Sky.

From Shillong we travelled to Cherrapunji. We stayed at The Polo Orchid. The room was incredible, with a plunge pool and plenty of space. I can clearly recall that we spent hours in that pool. At some point in time, we also changed rooms to get another view, and we saw the mountains and river. Dawki, Double Decker Living Root Bridge, Mawlynnong Village (Asia’s cleanest village) and Mawsynram (wettest place on earth) are the other must visit places. I tried the local cuisine but could not develop a taste for it. Rice is the staple and is eaten with a variety of meat and vegetables. Not much spice is used in their cooking.

The fresh air and lush greenery had captivated our senses. But alas, all good things must come to an end and we were heading back to Kolkata. During the drive to the airport, I kept the window of our car rolled down and breathed in the fresh air. We landed in Kolkata, picked up my dog from a kennel, and got back to my lovely little home. The experience was absolutely mesmerizing and full of fun.

Note : This story was written as part of an event organised at Mallika Malancha Housing Complex, Newtown, Kolkata. We commend them for encouraging young voices.
