Mother’s Day 2025: Why is Mother’s Day Celebrated, Best Gift Ideas & Tips
“Life doesn’t come with a Manual; it comes with a Mother.” – Cleophus (Cleo) Franklin Jr
Mother’s Day is a celebration dedicated to honouring the remarkable women who shape our lives with their unwavering love, care, and guidance. It’s a day to pause, reflect, and express gratitude for the countless sacrifices and nurturing that mothers and mother figures provide. Throughout history, mothers have played crucial roles not only in families but also in society at large, leaving lasting legacies that continue to inspire us. This blog explores the origin and significance of Mother’s Day, shares stories of famous mothers, and offers creative gift ideas to make this day truly special.
Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day ?
The origin of Mother’s Day was rooted in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The National Mother’s Day, celebrated every Second Sunday of May, was started to pay tribute to Ann Maria Jarvis, the Mother of Anna Jarvis. After the Death of Ann, Anna decided to honour this Day to celebrate the sacrifices made by a mother. The first church service in tribute to Mother’s Day was held in 1908 in West Virginia, which changed into a national holiday six years later. This day is also known as Mothering Sunday in Britain.
The holiday was inspired by Jarvis’s mother’s Friendship Day. Three years post-Civil War, Ann Maria Jarvis used to host Mother’s Friendship Day as an act of reconciliation between Union veterans and Confederate veterans and their families.
Significance of Mother’s Day

The significance of Mother’s Day is three-fold.
1.Symbol Of Gratitude
Firstly, it is celebrated as a symbol of gratitude. Mother’s Day is a time to show appreciation and love for our mothers, who look after us in surprising ways. Families can honour the women who form their lives during this time. It’s not only about giving gifts; it’s also about making memorable experiences, such as family lunches, homemade breakfasts, or time spent together. While some families provide mothers a private day to concentrate on themselves, others plan unique trips. Mother’s Day’s core is to let our mothers know that their love and commitment are appreciated.
2.Strengthening Family Bonds
Secondly, it phases in strengthening family bonds. The festivities of Mother’s Day strengthen the family’s bond with their mothers as they celebrate the day by having family lunches, family get together, lunches, or simply relaxing afternoons. Kids are encouraged to partake in simple, loving handcrafted gifts, flowers, or even cards which hold a special value. Telling stories and recalling special moments with mom helps them to reminisce about her worth and value, which strengthens the bond. Mother’s Day is not all about offering gifts; rather showering love, nurturing relationships, and fondly remembering moments spent together. For this reason, I have proposed the most special activities children enjoy doing with their mothers.
3.Celebration For All Women
Thirdly, Mother’s Day is a day of celebration for all the women who have taken care of us during our lives. It celebrates step-mothers, grandmothers, guardians, aunts, elder sisters and mothers like family friends. It is time to appreciate all who provide motherly love, whether it’s through little gestures or big sacrifices in tough times. Honouring all mother figures reinforces the fact that family can take on many forms and love is limitless. It is needed to identify and appreciate any person who, over the years, has been nurturing with great strength and empathy. Different mother figures can be appreciated with personalised messages tailored to suit their persona.
Famous Mothers Who Shaped History
Mother’s Day is a time to honour women who have shaped history, many of whom were mothers themselves. Six women whose legacies continue to inspire include Julia Ward Howe, Indira Gandhi, Marie Curie, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sarojini Naidu,Georgina Đuka Tesla, Sojourner Truth, and Abigail Adams. Julia Ward Howe, known for writing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” was a passionate advocate for women’s rights and peace. Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person to win in two different sciences. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a leading figure in the early women’s rights movement, advocating for women’s suffrage and equality. Georgina Đuka Tesla, the mother of Nikola Tesla, was an inventor, and her creativity greatly influenced her son. Sojourner Truth, born into slavery, became a powerful voice for abolition and women’s rights.
