Book review : Kali wants to dance

I was stunned the first time I set my eyes on the cover of this book. It has a graceful looking boy dancing near the sea. It took me by surprise as I did not know that boys could dance Bharatnatyam dance as well.

The book is about a boy named Kali Veerapathiran who lives in the fishing village named Kovalam. In the year 2000, Kali watches a dancer on television and learns to dance like her. One day, Sarah Chanda who manages the hospital sees his performance on stage and persuades Kali to join Bharatanatyam school and even pays his fees.

Leela Samson, head of Kalakshetra Bharatanatyam school takes Kali as a student. What happens next? Does he manage to learn dance and enjoy his life’s passion or does he struggle to fit in? How does his life change after that? Do read the book to find out.

This story is one of the best I have ever read. The best thing in the story is how he never gives up hope even after his legs have gotten hurt.

I would suggest a change in the part in which his akkas teased him about vomiting and could not sit in the bus. Maybe the book could have said his stomach was queasy? I also suggest that he shouldn’t have to put on makeup if he doesn’t want to.
