I Wish I Was

Once upon a time, there was a unicorn named Cupcake. She loved flying through the clouds, and sliding down on rainbows. When her glowy wings got tired, she went to her cozy rainbow home. She slept on a bed made of clouds. She loved helping other unicorns with her glowy horn.

Sometimes she would sit on a rainbow and look down at the sea. She was very interested in the life of a flamingo. They seemed to have it all! She would imagine that if she was a flamingo, she could make friends with fish, sea turtles and insects like dragonflies and ladybugs. They would have so many adventures together.

Meanwhile the flamingo that cupcake was looking at was thinking something similar. Her name was Flamey. She lived in a beautiful lake. But she always dreamt of flying high into the sky. She wanted to jump on clouds. She wanted to slide on rainbows. She wanted to meet sparrows and become friends with them. They can go on adventures together.

Cupcake and Flamey dreamt about how each other’s lives would be…   “Oh soooo good!!!!!” they thought.

One particular day after dreaming about each other’s lives, both Cupcake and Flamey said at the same “I wish I was ….. A flamingo  … A unicorn ….”

Suddenly, magical rainbow glitter came out of Cupcake’s horn and swirled around both of them.

WHOOOOOOOSHHHHHHHHH ….. After the glitter disappeared, Cupcake, who was a unicorn, changed into a flamingo. And Flamey, who was a flamingo, had become a unicorn!

Cupcake opened her eyes and looked around confused. “Where am I?” she said aloud. She looked at herself and asked “Who am I?” And then she realised what had happened.

“I AM A FLAMINGOOOO!!!” she yelled in joy.

She decided to waste no time and find her friends: fishes, sea turtles, dragonflies and ladybugs. And they could go on wonderful adventures.

As soon as she put her head under water to find fishes and sea turtles, a school of fish nearby got scared. They swam away really really fast. Cupcake tried to chase them, but the fish were too fast for her. Cupcake the flamingo was sad.

She then decided to find a sea turtle who would be her friend. She waded around for a long time but found no sea turtles. Suddenly, she realised that this is a lake. Sea turtles are not found in lakes. They are only found in oceans. And then she saw something coming close to her. She looked to her left and gasped. ”Oh no! A crocodile! I have to swim away”  And then she swam really fast.

After she reached a safe place away from the crocodile, she thought to herself, maybe being a flamingo was not a good idea.

Meanwhile, Flamey the unicorn was wondering the same thing. As soon as she became a unicorn, she flew happily around to meet sparrows. They were going to become such good friends, she thought. She found a nest on a tree and then she peeked into it. The sparrows got scared and flew away really really fast. Flamey the unicorn flew behind them screaming, “Please don’t go. I want to be your friend.”

The sparrows flew faster.

Flamey flew back to the clouds, feeling sad. I could jump up and down in the clouds, she thought to herself. That will make me happy.  So, she jumped up high and the minute she came down, the cloud dissolved into itty bitty raindrops. She fell and had to flap her wings really hard to go up again. She slowly got back up to a cloud, sat on it, and thought aloud “Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to become a unicorn. Their lives are so hard”

Both Flamey the unicorn, and Cupcake the flamingo closed their eyes and said aloud “I wish I was …. myself again”

Magical rainbow glitter swirled around them both. And when the glitter disappeared, Cupcake, who was a flamingo, turned back into a unicorn. And Flamey, who was a unicorn, turned back into a flamingo.

Both of them learnt a very important lesson that it is always good to be grateful for who you are.
