Does School Prepare us for the Real World?

School is often called our second home. It teaches us how to write, read and solve equations but does it really prepare us for the real-life challenges like managing money or stress. Most students graduate without knowing how to write a cheque or open a bank account. This is a matter of concern whether students passing out are well equipped to face the reality of life.
What Schools Get Right
To begin with, schools focus more on bookish knowledge and rote memorization, solving maths problems and studying science help develop our critical thinking. School teaches us several life skills like communication, presenting yourself in front of others or basic day to day life ethics.
Teamwork and Extracurriculars
Additionally, they encourage teamwork through group projects, extracurricular activities, and sports, which prepare us for working with others in future jobs or professions.
What’s Missing in Our Schools?
Balancing Academics and Life
However, is this enough? Does school really teach us how to manage extracurricular with our studies? My answer would be NO! Most of the time students feel burdened with assignments, endless deadlines, assemblies, and sports all together. This leads to stress, burnout, and self-doubt. Unfortunately, mental health, stress management, and financial literacy is often ignored in most schools.
The Pressure to Perform
Moreover, the focus is still heavily on marks and memorization, rather than building skills that are useful outside the four walls of the class. Fear of and comparing ourselves with others is the most common example one can think of.
Lack of Practical Knowledge
Practical lessons like filing taxes, applying for jobs, or managing money are rarely taught, yet they are necessary for adult life since the bank manager would be least bothered to know if you remember all the three newton’s laws.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while school does help us grow and learn many important skills, it doesn’t fully prepare us for the real world. To truly support students, schools need to balance academic subjects with practical life lessons, along with prioritizing mental health support, and more freedom to explore interests and be confident when it comes to decision making. To put it in a nutshell, the real problem lies not with the schools but with the education system itself.
