Artemis-2

Man on the moon is one of the most anticipated dreams of humanity. In 1969 our dream came true, Apollo 11 carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Micheal Collins to the moon surface for the first time. This was the pinnacle of the space race. After many failed attempts and misfortunes, Apollo 11 continued their legacy. For the past few years, we thought about men on mars but this time NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) cracked the code for two of humanity’s greatest dreams, a base on the moon and humans on mars.

This year NASA sent the Artemis II, to observe the moon, NASA has stated that Artemis III will be carrying humans to the moon and they will plant a base on the moon so that they could easily land on Mars without losing and costing too much fuel. The Artemis crew included a four members team, Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialist Christina Koch and Jerimy Hansen, and a small little plushie. This little plushie named RISE was special as it was created by an 8 years old boy, Lucas Ye, from California. This white moon shaped mascot served as a zero-gravity indicator, floating to signal the astronauts onboard when they reach weightlessness and will come to know when they have broken away from the earth’s atmosphere. It was inspired by Apollo 8, from 1968, “Earthrise” photo.

Their mission was scheduled to launch on the 2nd March 2026, but something unpredictable happened, the toilet and other things malfunctioned and glitches happened so they postponed the launch date. The glitches were related to the toilet and communication system, were rectified and after time of month they were ready to launch. But before one hour of launch some problems began to happen, as a fixed ARTEMISS-2 was launched successfully into the oblivion on 1st April 2026 carrying human crew towards the moon for the first time in 50 years. It was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The spacecraft was named “ORION” capsule and was lifted by the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

The Artemis 2 crew flight was designed to test the capabilities of Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) to carry humans on board. After its success it has become the vital intermediate step to clear the path of humans landing on the surface of the moon after a period of 50 years.

The crew saw and shared breathtaking views from space; they circled around the moon. During the mission the space craft faced technical problems with their communication system and toilet, which was rectified. The crew also reported a slight burning smell from the toilet area. Later it was confirmed harmless.

The spacecraft looped around the far side of the moon without entering lunar orbit. Hence lunar gravity naturally pulled the spacecraft back to the earth for its entry into the earth atmosphere and final splash down on 10th April 2026, safely in the Pacific Ocean southwest of San Diego, California.

Some facts from Artemis 2 mission:

  • Reid Wiseman (Commander) became the oldest person to travel beyond low Earth orbit.
  • Victor Glover (Pilot) became the first person of colour to travel to the Moon.
  • Christina Koch (Mission Specialist) became the first woman to travel to the Moon.
  • Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist) became the first non-U.S. citizen (Canadian Space Agency) to make the journey around the moon.
