Title: AFTER TWENTY YEARS
Author : O’HENRY
Publisher: New York World, 1905
First reaction to the introduction: When I read the introduction, I thought that it will be a peaceful, friendly and an emotional story but I felt very interested with the unexpected twists and was very curious to read further.
In my sister’s English book, I had seen this story in a prose. I read the prose fully and I was attracted by the clever wordplay by the author and bought the book.
The theme of the book is just 3 mantras ,’FRIENDSHIP, PROMISE and PUNCTUALITY.’ It is a book about two best friends, Jimmy and Bob who had to part ways. They return to keep an appointment they had made twenty years ago. The book simply focuses on the reunion of two best friends.
The main character is Bob, as the story is centered around him waiting for his old friend to meet him at their chosen time and place.
I felt that the key takeaway is about how people can change over time, yet still keep their bonds of friendship intact.
The tone of the book was generally somber and nostalgic.
My favorite part was the tragic ending as two close friends who have vowed to reunite after twenty years, find themselves too changed to remain friends forever.
I learnt to respect friendship and also to keep up promise and punctuality. If I could change something in the story, it would be the part when the cop leaves, Bob meets another man with plain clothes. I would make him address the man in a way that there will no confusion.
This book is best for all age group but I prefer it is best for 12+ years
My ratings for the book is

5 star rating
