 An Unforeseen Turn of Events

A young, well-built man stood at the door, clad in a black vest and a pair of black jeans. “Hi, I am Alex Pinkpig. Is it Mr. Wreckman?” said the stranger cheerfully. Alfric was taken aback. He was sure that the nameplate, pride, and imprudence emblazoned on it would surely deceive him if he tried to veil his identity. Therefore, he replied, “Yeah, I am Alfric Wreckman. How do you know me, and how did you find my apartment? Apparently, my house stands in the middle of nowhere as a miniature water villa.” Alex laughed and said, “Like attracts like. This is the sole answer to all your questions regarding how I came to know about you and even managed to get to your doorstep.”

Seeing Alfric’s perplexed countenance, Alex said, “You didn’t understand, right? Let me explain. If I were to introduce myself and my purpose of approaching you, then I would say that I am an unemployed man without much formal education, but I have the capacity to carrying out intense physical work and am quite adept in most of the maneuvers like rope climbing, pickpocketing, etc. ” With a small pause, Alex continued, “I am seeking for a proper job but not finding one. Thus, I have come to the conclusion that, on account of my physique and age, I can take up robbery as my profession. Hence, according to me, I would find none better than you who could help me earn and achieve expertise in this field. In today’s world, online crimes are in the limelight. Hence, I suppose, it’s quite difficult for you to find an assistant of your kind. Thus, if you put forth your approval, then this deal might be quite beneficial for you too.”

Alfric looked up and said, frowning, “How should I rely upon you? I don’t even know you.” Alex replied, with a serene smile suffused across his face, “Listen, Alfric, even if I ever wish to, my hunger and responsibility would never allow me to choose the path of betrayal, which is to get me nowhere close to my goals.” Alfric took a minute to  judge on the aptness of Alex’s claim. He took a deep breath, smiled and gestured to him to come in.

They sat on the small sofa, and Alfric said, with sombreness dawning upon his tone, “Okay, fine. You will start working from tonight itself, and I shall share a part of my profit with you on the basis of your performances in each mission.” Alex said, “Agreed. This deal is fine with me. I can help you in every possible way, but the only constraint from my side is that I won’t commit any murder. In the quest for success, I can’t put my minimum morals on stake.”

Days and weeks passed. Alex’s expertise in the field proved to be a great help for both his family and for Alfric. The duo would carry out robbery operations in bank vaults, sometimes at jewellery stores, sometimes at government buildings, and sometimes at shopping malls, too. Alfric would pay Alex well, either in cash or in kind. He had also become more like a friend than a subordinate to Alfric. Within the next three months, Alex had enough income to construct his own house. A considerable part of this achievement can be attributed to the successful platinum theft that was carried out last week.

It was Monday evening, and Mr. Seawood was sitting on the sofa, engulfed in a whirlpool of thoughts. He had planned a very intensive mission to Berryland Shopping Complex tonight, but on the other hand, Alex had not appeared even once since Thursday evening. He got up and tried to reach Alex through the telephone for the third time. This time, a woman answered, revealing important and shocking information to him. The woman informed him that Alex had joined a job just three to four days ago, and therefore, being very much occupied with his duty, he could not  update Alfric about his whereabouts.

Now, it was not too hard for Alex to open up about Alfric’s profession because he had already laid his hands on a cleaner job position, maybe. Thus, Alfric, with a menancing tone, said on the telephone, “I am reaching your place by eight in the evening. I hope your son will be there by then. I don’t care what job he has taken up, but you have got to ensure your son’s return before I arrive there. I hope you know that this is Mr. Wreckman speaking to you.” He slammed the receiver down and ran to get the key to his scooter.

It was nearly seven fifty, and Alfric had just reached Alex’s new apartment, rage boiling within him. He was about to press the calling bell when he heard some hushed sounds from behind. It was a police officer along with his constables, encompassing him. He turned to his right to seek an escape but froze at his place immediately.

Alex, in the brand new uniform of a constable, stood there with unprecedented confidence and supremacy gleaming in his eyes. He laughed and said, “You should have never tried to break into a police constable’s house.”
