The Last Chakra Firecracker
Diwali Day with Grandparents
It was officially Diwali. The sweets and fireworks were stacked up. I waited with anticipation to be able to burst them. It was now November 21st. I went to my grandparents’ house and readied myself to burst the crackers. We burst all of them one by one. We finally came to the end of the lot. There were two more chakras left. My grandfather decided it was his turn to burst crackers now. He picked up one chakra and told us he had a different way to light it.
The Unexpected

He held it in his hand while lighting. My mother and brother told him it wouldn’t end well, but he, being my grandfather, obviously didn’t listen. The first one didn’t light at all since it was somehow faulty. He then picked up the second one. Now I hid behind my grandmother in fear. I didn’t want to watch him light it because I knew it wouldn’t end well. He lit it up, and he burned his hand. I, being six years old, started crying. My mom hurried to call a doctor, and my mom and my grandfather rushed to the hospital. I begged my mom to take me too, but she left without a second glance. At the time, it seemed like she was abandoning me, but a few hours later, they were back. My grandfather’s hand swelled up to around five times its size. He wore a cast on his right hand.
Grandfather’s tricks
That Diwali changed my perspective forever. Now, instead of eagerly awaiting Diwali, I wait for my grandfather to come up with something as silly every year.
