The Canvas of The Pyrrian Peaks
The Canvas
ZIP! Jamie had just finished packing his backpack. He had been looking forward to this trip all month. His friends had been telling him all about the Pyrrian Mountains, but when he asked them to join him for the hike, they looked unsettled and flat-out said no.
“Well, no problem. They have been urbanised and don’t know what it feels like to go out into the wilderness and enjoy nature,” Jamie muttered to himself as he double-checked his gear.
In his backpack, he had packed a basic lunch, a flask of tomato soup, some grilled cheese sandwiches and some breadsticks with a bottle of water. He also packed a torch, his tent, some binoculars, headphones and some mosquito spray.
He checked his phone for the weather forecast, “Aw, man! It’s gonna be cold AND rainy?! Well, can’t go back now!” He sighed and slipped his phone into his pocket. However excited he was, he couldn’t shake the faces of his friends from his mind — faces pale in fear and fright.
He had booked a taxi to take him to the starting point of the trail and he was getting restless as the minutes ticked by and no car was in sight.
As he was going to pull out his phone to call the driver, he heard a horn and a screech of tyres pulling into his driveway.
“At least I’m not THAT late,” Jamie mumbled under his breath.
Jamie slid into the backseat.
“Where you going?” the driver asked.
“To the Pyrrian Mountain hike trail, please,” responded Jamie, gleefully.
The driver paused, frowning. “Are you sure, kid? Somebody gave you the wrong place?”
“YES! I AM SURE!”
Jamie was tired of the driver’s antics, so he put on his headphones and put some music on his phone. After a while, they were passing the smooth highway road with its traffic lights, stop signs and concrete jungles slowly transitioning into pine trees and hills. “OOF!” Jamie exclaimed; he was thrown into the air, after the car hit a pothole on the road. The smooth highway was replaced by a winding and bumpy road which had a habit of throwing its victims out of their seats.
By this time, the bright, hot sunshine was slowly dimming into twilight. It wasn’t dark, but the sun would set in a few hours.
During the drive, Jamie had noticed that the driver was unusually quiet, not that he didn’t mind, but the driver was repeatedly looking back at him with a concerned look on his face.
Jamie thought to himself, “What is this guy’s problem?”
The car screeched to a halt.
“Here’s your stop, kid,” said the driver.
And Jamie was all set to start his adventure.
