The Twenty-20 (T20) world cup is here! Today as India kicks off its campaign with its first match against Ireland here is a ready reckoner to help you understand the tournament better.
What is T20?
A Twenty20 International (T20I) is a form of cricket, played between international members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), where each team faces a maximum of twenty overs. One team bats first for 20 overs and the other team has 20 overs to chase down that score.
Where and when is the T20 world cup happening?
The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the ninth edition. It is being co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States from 1 to 29 June 2024. It is the first major ICC event tournament to feature matches played in the United States.
How many teams are participating?
This year, 20 teams are participating, the record for the most teams participating in the T20 world cups so far. In the previous edition of 2022, 16 teams took part. The teams include India, Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Nepal, Oman, Namibia, Uganda, Netherlands, and the United States of America.
What is the tournament format?
The 20 qualifying teams have been divided into four groups of five teams. The top two teams in each group will advance to the Super 8 round. The qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four; the top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage, which will consist of two semi-finals and a final.
Which players are part of the Indian squad?
India will be led by Rohit Sharma with former great Rahul Dravid in his last tournament as India seniors men’s coach.
