Rewritten Ink Cannot Erase Fate
I walk between the margins of poetry sonnets,
Lie in the space between sentences of stories,
Bask in the glorious moonlight before you flip the page,
And continue on where shadows gather like whispers.
I trace the curve of commas,
Hang off the words trembling on the edge of thought,
Dwell in the stop where understanding hesitates,
Run through the fields of metaphors blooming like wildflowers,
And each heartbeat is a footnote in the story.
I unravel in every question mark,
And stitch myself together where the characters linger,
Tucking myself into the silence between words,
And breathe in what is felt and said in ink.
I laugh with them and let the sound echo between the phrases,
Mourn when they fall,
As if my grief and tears can surpass the page.
I try and nudge the ink when nobody is looking,
Tilt the balance and meaning of a single term,
Hands trembling,
Where nobody can see.
But I am bound to the margin,
Right before the story unfolds,
Forced to endure the destruction,
And the unravel.
I am privy to the decisions,
Beginning to end,
And watch helplessly,
Limited to the number of pages i turn.
I press my palms to veil of ink,
The page too generous now,
I’m pressed flat between intention and mistake,
An enduring smudge ‘backspace’ just can’t delete.
Each page is like a guillotine,
Each sentence a plank i am forced to walk,
Knowing where it leads,
And knowing I cannot turn.
Still,
I hope for a skipped heartbeat,
A hesitation,
Or a misread line.
Because even when stories end,
I don’t,
I turn open another heartbreak, Another bittersweet tale,
And stay in the white,
Nothing to change, or so you think.
