Mental Health Awareness is a Must

The world has reached a population of 8 billion recently. We always talk about that as a problem. But there is something even more concerning that we don’t talk about. One such issue is depression.

According to the World Health Organization, depression affects over 300 million people globally, and it is predicted to be the leading cause of disability by 2030. A recent report in the Times of India said that studies indicate that depression rates are increasing among young people in India with prevalence rates ranging from 31% to 57%. Unicef also reports that one out of seven young people between the ages of 15 to 24 in India always feels depressed or has little interest in doing things.

Some causes of depression are childhood traumas, genes, health issues, abuse, alteration in brain chemistry, stress, academic pressure, peer pressure, loneliness etc.

Depression is not only about emotions but is an illness as well and one that has a lot of stigma attached to it. If we feel overwhelmed with our emotions, it is best to reach out to a counsellor to help deal with them best. If we know someone who is having a difficult time, it is our duty to help them get professional help too.
