Importance Of Teamwork In Sports And Daily-Life
Introduction: Living the Life Together
Oscar Wilde, the famous Irish Writer once said, “The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything”… but all 3, the old, the middle-aged and the young are convinced on 1-thing these days- “Living The Life” (or) more precisely, “Looking Forward To Living The Life” seem to be the new trend amongst the above 3 groups of Indians. That brings us to the question?
What does it mean to “Live the Life”? Is it healthy living, happy living, contented living, adventurous living, ambitious living, (or) is it just a successful living? Whatever be the definition, it is always better if the fruits of that Life is shared with many, achieved as a Team, and on the backdrop of remembering the folks who helped us get there. ie. Parents, Family Members, Teachers, Friends, Mentors etc. Isn’t it?!?
Humans as Social Animals

In my Grade-6 Biology-class, when it is being taught that we Humans are social animals, I used to wonder what being a “social” animal is?! It simply means, we live in a society, as a group, among other humans, and more importantly be part of each other’s success and failures. So, should I say, we inherently lead a Life as a Team.
Going a little further into the topic… let’s take a moment to delve into how important is TEAM and TEAMwork. Shall we?!?!
Understanding Teamwork
Whenever we hear the word TEAMwork, we immediately start thinking of people working together, helping each other, being there for each other and achieving goals that couldn’t be successfully achieved alone. Yes? Now this question may come to all our minds that-
“What is the need of TEAMwork and where all it can help us?”. I too had this query lingering in my mind until that one day when it started to become clearer to me.

One day, in my Grade-6 Social-class, our social teacher had given us a project to work on, providing the option to do it individually (or) as a group. I chose to do it individually as I felt it would be easier to accomplish your task alone with less arguments / fights and a lot less messy than coordinating with a TEAM!
But within a couple of days, I was struggling to manage both my academics and this very interesting project. That was the moment, I realized that I had no option but to take the help of my classmates / friends. To my pleasant surprise, within a day or two, we as a TEAM made tremendous progress and eventually completed our project which surprisingly turned out to be really nice! This was my Eureka moment you could say… as through this experience, I understood that TEAMwork doesn’t mean just coordinating with a bunch of people, but it also means dividing responsibilities, learning to share ideas with each other and more importantly supporting each other to attain results which may come out far better than what we can do alone!
Teamwork in Daily Life
With human mind being the world’s cheapest time-machine… that night at home, my mind helped me travel back to early days of survival of humans (ofcourse, not for real ) and visualize how it must have been for our species to survive in the jungle and vividly understood why humans became “social” animals in the 1st place.
Imagine the success our species would have had in hunting as a group, cultivating crops / vegetables as a TEAM, withstanding famine (and/or) drought as one community and of course fighting a predatory species together than struggling to live alone in the jungle.
The above 2 examples highlight simple yet powerful ways in which TEAMwork is quite helpful in our Daily lives, there are obviously many other instances as well in our day to day lives at home where we see TEAMwork work wonders like
- Decorating our house during Festivals like Deepavali and
- Assisting mum draw small tiny feats of Baby Krishna on the floor during Gokulashtami etc.
- Planning / packing / preparing for a Vacation,
- Cooking for an Occasion,
- Even managing day to day chores and
- celebrating a happy moment (like RCB lifting IPL trophy, Gukesh getting crowned as
- Chess world champion etc.) with a larger group.
- Truth be told, I did TEAM up with my dad while writing this as well for curating my words and the necessary nudge thrugh ideas for starting and ending lines!
Importance of Teamwork in Sports

But, is TEAMwork important anywhere else… like in Sports?!?
As we know… Sports help every individual to not just stay physically fit but also mentally agile. While broadly there are 2 types, the “Individual” Sports (If you ask me, no Sport is truly an “Individual” Sport as there is always a big team working behind the player like his/her coach, supportive parents, helpful staffs etc.) and “TEAM” Sports, in general almost all Sports demand the player to put in intense preparation and practice, fast thinking on the ground, handling ups and downs while facing an opponent, help the players build a larger sense of TEAM spirit and most importantly expect the individual to be relentlessly focused on that 1-game, 1-rally, 1-ball, 1-serve…
Being someone who is fortunate to have been introduced to many Sports early on in my life… like Karate at the age of 3, Soccer at the age of 5, Throwball at 6, Chess- Basketball-Cricket-Badminton in recent years… I strongly believe that TEAMing in Sports are not only there for players to have fun and win. Yes, winning is fun but there are a lot of other advantages behind them too. For example, it helps in building coordination, reduce stress (or more importantly prepare individuals to manage stressful situations), follow discipline on & off the ground, follow the rules, overcome shyness and challenges by performing in front of large crowd, impart confidence in oneself and trust the strength / capabilities of others in your team while handling the most intense situations that a game / match demands.
Lessons from Teamwork in Sports
Like in daily chores, while playing sports, a clear display of togetherness through whatever moments of the game, do show us how each and every teammate`s effort matters. Just like how all fingers aren’t alike, different players in a TEAM may not possess the same competence & skills but the winner is almost always the TEAM that played as ONE. Like how a folded palm (a knuckle) is stronger than the individual fingers… even a single goal (or) a point isn`t just from an individual – it is the contribution of the entire team.
Start Teaming Today
Let us start TEAMing, friends. Together we can write tomorrow’s history while having fun today!! All studies without collective fun can make us students (the future of India…) dull, isn’t it
