What if everything around you could become art?

In this inspiring TED-Ed style talk, 13-year-old Samaira Pruthi challenges the idea that creativity depends on expensive tools. Through a fun “Excuse or Fact” game and personal stories, she shows how art isn’t limited to paints and brushes—it exists in everyday life.

From making rangoli during Diwali to creating coffee art and drawing in the sand, Samaira reminds us that creativity is not about what we have, but how we use it. Her powerful message encourages young minds to think differently, break societal assumptions, and express themselves freely.

Because in the end—life is a canvas, you are the artist, and everything around you is an art supply.

About Speaker : Samaira Pruthi

I’m an aspiring writer and a keen reader. I’ve always had a love for art with just the right measure of experimenting. This is what has inspired me to give my talk, which is titled, “Everything is an art supply- even a candy!” Because ‘art’ isn’t expensive paints and paint brushes it’s free passion and joy. It isn’t just ‘painting’, it’s everything you can and love to do.

Everything is an art supply even a candy !

I’d like to begin with a game of excuse or fact where you have to tell me if according to you what I’ve said is just an excuse or a fact. Simple enough?

Well, let’s begin. You can’t make juice without the juicer. Excuse or fact. Most of you would say fact, but it’s really an excuse. You can’t eat without spoon.
Excuse or fact? Judge me all you want.
It’s an excuse. You can’t make art without and paint brushes. Excuse or fact? That is something I would like to change your opinion about. What living in an Indian household has taught me is that card is just an excuse and that that is nothing you can’t do. You can squeeze the juice out of your own hands.
You can eat with your own hands and you can make art without paints and paint brushes. Flashback. I still haven’t forgotten how my mine has completely changed the way I saw art. Looking for your paints after a long break from painting can be stressful. Well, in my case, at least just this once, it was hopeless. Either my parents love to play hide-and-seek and practically walk from one place to another, or I was temporarily blind for the time I would look for them. Well, let’s be honest.
Just in the end, my pains were a game of hide-and-seek, and I sunk back in my chair, thinking, “No pains, no art.” But really, I looked around my room, the wooden door, the rocking chair, my inspiration, the un candle, my favorite pool, and some random bubble gum. My paints. I had everything I needed to make art. Expensive art supplies aren’t accessible to all. Not everyone can buy rupees 2,000 worth of paints and rupees 4,000 worth of paint brushes. Now, can they in my house every festival has accessible art and unlimited fun proof that spending a lot of money isn’t necessary to adore? During Diwali the festival of lights, my house is filled with commotion and people running here and there making rangis painting the not with expensive material but me with flowers and natural colored paste.
I’m sure all of you have tried the famous coffee art spilling what you should be drinking on a sheet of paper and drawing what you think that blob of coffee looks like. Right? If you live near a beach, which I do, you can use sand and water to make castles. You can draw in the sand. In short, you can make the best of nature’s art supplies with an already existing creative mind and an already existing environment.
The real creativity isn’t in splashing paints all over the canvas and calling it modern art. It lies in knowing what those blasts mean. What I’m trying to say is that expressing yourself through art shouldn’t be expensive. It should be worth how much you can afford. But the art you’ve created from your expressions is priceless, worth nothing else in this world. And as Elenor Rose rightly said, make the most of what you have when you have it where you have it.
Our environment is filled with things with fixed purposes. But why do we for justice once go against them and do what we feel is right? Why not? Because we think it’s unacceptable to society.
Sure. But the loophole is the word think. Just because we think it’s unacceptable doesn’t really make it. And also we should stop thinking about what society thinks.
Now tell me how many of you think you aren’t good? Most of you would say you aren’t, but trust me, you are. And by art, I don’t just mean canvas art.
Cooking, reading, swimming, everything is an art. In fact, even drinking water could be an art as far as I believe. It is up to you how beautifully you use things around you to create your masterpiece, your life. Life is a canvas. You are your own art and everything around you is an art supply. So go make some art.
