Cowardice
There once lived two foxes in a deep forest. One was much stronger than the other. One day, both of them walked through the woods looking for food. They wanted to savour the taste of meat, rather than the berries they always feasted on.
“Do you think we’ll find something to eat?” asked the strong fox.
“Don’t give up that fast, dude! I’m sure there will be something,” responded the weak fox.
A few moments passed. “Would you look at that! We found a deer!”
“Hey, your eyes are sharper than I thought!” complimented the strong fox.
They both feasted on the deer until their tummies were full. However, a sneaky little rabbit watched the whole thing. The rabbit knew the deer belonged to the lion, the king of the forest, and quickly ran off to tell him.
The lion was furious. He had the temper of a boiling kettle, and he immediately summoned both foxes for an interrogation. Anyone who gave the wrong answer would be executed.
The lion questioned the strong fox first: “Why did you eat my food when you knew it was mine?”
The strong fox cowered. He was too terrified to say a single word and kept his mouth shut. This made the lion even angrier, and he executed the strong fox on the spot.
Next, the lion turned to the weak fox: “Now, you tell me, why did you eat my feast when you knew it was mine?”
The fox tried to protest, “Well, if I had known, why would I have eaten your food?”
The lion viewed the response as arrogant. “Oh, how cocky. Who are you to speak to me with that attitude? Aren’t you scared? Don’t you know I’m the strongest in this forest?”
“Quit dreaming!” the fox responded bravely. “I know you’re stronger than me, and I admit that I’m weak. But even the weakest person who can’t protest, fight, or defend can still be strong!”
The lion raised an eyebrow. “Huh? How? Elaborate!”
“The ones who don’t cower in front of anyone—whether their opponent is the strongest in the world or the weakest—those who don’t let their guard down just because they’re scared, and those who keep courage in their hearts no matter their power or title, are considered the truly strong. It’s not about who has the most physical strength! Even those who constantly brag about their power aren’t strong; they’re just arrogant. Titles don’t matter when they are given to the worst person; they only matter when earned by someone truthful. Power doesn’t matter much when it belongs to an arrogant person; it only matters when it is paired with bravery. I am simply trying to say that I won’t stop standing up for myself, but that doesn’t make me a brat!” explained the fox.
The lion was too stunned to speak. Impressed by his intelligence, philosophy, and incredible bravery, he rewarded the fox with loads of food and prey. From that day on, the lion made the clever fox his royal assistant.

FAQs Cowardice I Story By Jesica Sinha
How did the two foxes end up in trouble with the lion?
The foxes found and ate a deer in the forest to satisfy their craving for meat. Unbeknownst to them, the deer belonged to the lion, the king of the forest. A rabbit witnessed them eating it and reported them to the lion.
Why was the strong fox executed by the lion?
When questioned by the lion, the strong fox was paralyzed by fear and remained silent. The lion took this silence as defiance or disrespect, which angered him enough to execute the strong fox on the spot.
Why did the lion spare and reward the weak fox instead of executing him?
The weak fox spoke up courageously and presented a powerful philosophical argument about what true strength means. Impressed by his bravery, wisdom, and willingness to stand up for himself despite being physically weaker, the lion spared his life and made him his royal assistant.
What is the main moral of the story?
True strength is not defined by physical power, muscle, or titles, but by mental courage, truthfulness, and the courage to stand up for oneself even in the face of overwhelming danger.
What contrast does the story draw between the two foxes?
The story contrasts physical strength vs. inner courage:
- The Strong Fox: Possesses physical capability but lacks internal fortitude; when confronted with real danger, he cowers in fear.
- The Weak Fox: Lacks physical dominance but possesses sharp intellect, bravery, and emotional strength, allowing him to navigate a life-or-death situation.
What is the weak fox’s definition of “true strength”?
According to the weak fox, truly strong individuals are those who:
- Do not cower before anyone, regardless of how powerful their opponent is.
- Keep courage in their hearts despite their physical limitations or titles.
- Refuse to let fear dictate their actions or silence their voice.
What role does the rabbit play in the story’s narrative structure?
The rabbit acts as the inciting incident catalyst (the snitch). By reporting the foxes to the lion, the rabbit creates the central conflict that tests both foxes’ characters and brings about the climax.
How does the lion’s character evolve throughout the encounter?
The lion initially displays quick-tempered, authoritarian arrogance (“the temper of a boiling kettle”). However, when challenged intellectually by the weak fox, he proves to be receptive to wisdom and fair judgment, shifting from a terrifying tyrant to an appreciative ruler.
