The Power of Karma I Story by Nandan

The Power of Karma

A long time ago, there was a woman named Suneetha. She had a daughter. Her daughter had school the next day but wasn’t sleepy.

“Mom, can you tell me a story, please?” asked the daughter.

“Sure,” said Suneetha.

“Once upon a time, there was a man named John, who lived in a small town in England. He lived in a small family, which had a simple lifestyle, and he had a child named Tom. Tom was just entering the teenage phase of his life. He knew that his family was financially unstable, so he started working as a labourer in a meat shop and also managed school. His job was to clean the shop and also to clean animal droppings. Although he worked as a labourer, he had great ambitions deep in his mind. He wanted to become a great musician, but he didn’t want to trouble his family, so he never asked them to buy him any instrument.

While he was working hard to support his family financially, his mother also worked hard and kept the house clean by doing the dishes and other household chores. His mother’s name was Anne. John, Tom’s father, worked as a taxi driver. He too worked very hard daily, driving his taxi to distant regions and transporting his customers from one place to another.

John didn’t know that Tom worked. Tom used to write about how his day went in a small book. He kept it in a private and closed place, his closet, because he thought no one would ever open it. He had written that he was working in the meat shop and that whatever he earned, he had silently put into his father’s purse. He also wrote that he was longing for a musical instrument.

One day, while his mother was cleaning the house, she opened Tom’s closet to dust it. While she was opening it, the diary slipped out. Anne wondered what was written in it, so she opened the diary. She found out that Tom was working! She was both proud and sad. She was proud because Tom also contributed to the family, and sad because she didn’t want her child to toil at an early age. She quickly told John about what she had seen. John did not believe it at first, but then Anne showed him the book. John was broken. His eyes were full of tears.

Then the couple sat down to talk. “We should really do something about this without Tom knowing,” said Anne.

“You’re right,” said John. “There’s a simple solution: analyse what’s written in his diary.”

Then both of them looked at each page of Tom’s diary. At first, they didn’t find any useful information, but after some time they found that he wanted to own an instrument. John looked into the distance and said, “I’ve heard him listening to guitar tutorials.”

“Same here,” said Anne.

“Then here’s the solution. November 28th is his birthday, and today is October 28th. We’ve got about a month. So, I’ll drive taxis day and night, and your speciality is art. So… guess what? Start an art class! Make a small tent a bit far from our house and start the class there. Name it ‘Anne’s Art Academy’.”

“That’s a good idea,” said Anne.

“Then let’s get to work,” John said.

After the discussion, the two started working. John drove taxis day and night, and Anne started teaching art. Some days, John’s legs pained, but he never gave up. They truly toiled for their son.

Then came 27th November, one day before Tom’s birthday. John went to the instrument shop and bought a guitar, while Anne decorated their home. John came back from the shop, and after a while, Tom came home. He didn’t know about any of this.

The next morning, his parents woke up at dawn. John had also bought a capo for the guitar. Anne prepared Tom’s favourite meal: blueberry pancakes with maple syrup. Meanwhile, John prepared Tom’s favourite cake, chocolate cake.

Tom had woken up! The moment he opened his eyes, his parents were singing happy birthday to him. Tom had his breakfast. After that, his dad gave him his new guitar and capo. He was very happy. He hugged and kissed his parents.

Then Tom held the guitar. His fingers were shaky, but he was very excited. Slowly, he started to play Happy Birthday. As the music filled the room, John and Anne cried happy tears.

Then his father made him join the music academy. He became a great musician. He knew his parents’ favourite place was India. So, once he was financially stable, he took them to their favourite country.”

By the time the story ended, Suneetha’s daughter was in a beautiful sleep.
