The Crystal Garden
A New School Year
One cold winter morning, Sarah woke up to go to school. She was starting fifth grade that day. She was nervous because all her other friends had gone to private schools or different countries. She hoped the school bully, Marta, had also gone away.
As Sarah got up from her cozy bed, she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth. After brushing her teeth, she ate her breakfast, which was crispy toast with strawberry jam. Yum! She got dressed and packed her bag with Science, English, and Math books for school.
Meeting Lexi
As she boarded the bus, she saw that it was full of chattering children, and the only seat empty was beside a girl who was Sarah’s age.
“Hi,” said the girl. “My name is Lexi.”
“My name is Sarah. Do you want to be friends?” said Sarah kindly.
They both started talking for the whole bus ride. After a few days, they had become best friends.
The Strange Tree

One day, when Lexi visited Sarah’s house, they discovered a strange, crooked tree growing in Sarah’s backyard. When Sarah touched it, she expected the texture to be rough like normal tree bark, but she found it smooth and shimmering — and it was glowing.
When Sarah looked to her right, she saw Lexi sinking inside the tree bark.
Lexi cried out for help. “Help me! Help me! Sarah, come on, I’m sinking!”
“I’m coming!” exclaimed Sarah.
Sarah started to move, only to find herself arm-deep in the bark. She didn’t know what to do, but she thought her parents would — since they were rescuers.
“Help!” cried Sarah and Lexi.
Sarah’s parents rushed out, but it was too late. By the time they opened the back door, they saw only Sarah’s fingers poking out of the bark. When Sarah disappeared completely inside, they grabbed shovels and started digging, thinking that Sarah and Lexi might be under the ground.
Welcome to the Crystal Garden
Meanwhile, Sarah and Lexi found themselves in a strange world, looking at a mysterious woman. Behind the woman was a giant person who looked like Sarah’s mother.
The woman said calmly, “My name is Athana.”
“I’m Sarah, and this is Lexi,” introduced Sarah.
“Welcome to the Crystal Garden,” said Athana.
Sarah asked, “Why the name Crystal Garden? Why not Crystal Kingdom?”
Athana replied, “As you can see, those giant people are your parents. We have shrunk down to the size of ants, and this whole garden is like one kingdom for us.”
“Oh,” said Sarah, understanding.
Danger Above
Suddenly, they heard a scream — it was Lexi. Sarah’s mom had almost hit her with a shovel as they were digging the sand. Without thinking, they all started running for the safety of a cottage.
As they struggled to open the door, Athana found the keys on the floor and unlocked it.
“Phew!” sighed Lexi, sitting down on one of the beds in the cottage.
“We’d better get going. It’s getting dark, and the dogs will come out,” said Athana.
The Ant’s Rescue
While they were thinking of a solution, someone walked in without knocking — it was an ant! Sarah and Lexi were surprised to see such a big ant because they thought they were normal-sized.
“Quick!” said the ant. “I have a way underground.”
They followed the ant as he tunnelled into the ground. After an hour, they finally reached the surface but found a cat waiting at the top! They escaped and ran toward Sarah’s mom’s leg. She had given up digging and was about to cut the tree to find them.
Returning Home
Meanwhile, Athana cast a spell to make Sarah and Lexi normal size again. As they started growing bigger, they said goodbye to Athana and the ant, whose name was Quil.
When they were about the height of a toddler, Sarah’s mom noticed them and hugged them both tightly.
As Sarah looked back, she saw that the tree had completely vanished. She knew she was safe and living a happy life. Then Sarah saw the time — it was almost time for Lexi to go home.
They both said goodbye, returned to their nightly routines, and fell asleep, living happily ever after.
