The Woodpecker’s Home

The Mango Tree and Its Visitors

The mango tree stood on the edge of the garden, near the boundary wall. Its fruits were so tasty that every summer it attracted hordes of naughty young boys from near and far. Troops of monkeys were also regular visitors. The monkeys were not content with only mangoes — they invaded the house too.
Tired of this regular task of warding off monkeys and boys, Chiku’s father decided to cut down the mango tree.

Grandma cried a little because she had planted it herself when Chiku’s father was just a little baby. Chiku had other concerns: “Does it mean no more jams, pickles and mango desserts in summer?”

The Lumberjacks Arrive

The Woodpecker’s Home I Story by Aaranyak

Two stout lumberjacks arrived one Sunday morning. The tree was strong and sturdy. The two of them had to struggle really hard.
“Ouch!” one of them screamed.
“What happened?” asked the other.

Before he could finish, something hit him hard on the head. He looked up and saw a woodpecker. It flew up and perched on a hole in the trunk of the mango tree.
“It must be its nest. That is why it is attacking us,” the first man said.

Chiku Investigates

Chiku, who was observing everything closely, decided to investigate the matter himself. He was an expert at climbing trees. Whenever he sensed his mother would beat him, he would sprint to the garden and climb a tree, waiting for his mother to cool down.

Chiku peered into the hole and found the woodpecker feeding four little chicks. It melted his little heart.

Saving the Woodpecker’s Home

He climbed down the tree and hurried to his grandmother.
“Grandma, please stop them from cutting the tree. A woodpecker lives there and she has little chicks now.”

“Piku!” his Grandma shouted. That was what she called Chiku’s father.
The young man, who was enjoying his Sunday newspaper, came running.

“What is it, Ma?”
“I want you to send these men away. We will not have the tree cut.”

“Why, Ma? Summer is coming. It will again bring trouble every day.”

“We will increase the height of the boundary wall so that boys cannot climb over it. And we will fit grills in the balconies to keep the monkeys out of the house.”

“But that would mean a lot of expense, Ma.”

“Let it be so. We cannot render a mother and her children homeless. Moreover, we should not cut trees instead save trees”
