Introduction

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous characters in suspense and detective fiction. But what if the character was given an Indian twist. Well, this book illustrates the thought beautifully.

Plot Summary

Shrilok is an orphaned boy who lives with his uncle. He makes his living by working as a chaiwalla in the slums of Mumbai. Chaiwalla means tea stall keeper in Hindi.

One day, in the rambling streets of Mumbai, Rohan Doctor stumbles upon him while returning from school. This is the beginning of a friendship that takes us, as a reader, on an unforgettable journey.

The duo solves many mysteries. These mysteries often are so puzzling that Inspector Divya Lokhande and the police force cannot solve them. It seems as if the friends can take on any locha, Hindi for problem or in this case mystery.

As the range of connected short stories give way to a climactic ending, Shrilok launches his biggest and most dangerous investigation yet. Armed with his Indian Baker Street Irregulars he searches far and wide for a terrorist who remains invisible to the police.

The following day tragedy strikes.

Writing Style & Indian Elements

I, as a reader and an Indian, found this story extremely enjoyable. The Indian influence and overall desi feel is epic. The writing style from the first person perspective of Rohan is great. But, again as a reader and as an Indian.

What Could Be Better

I feel the word ‘bro’ is redundant and breaks the Indian ambience of the narrative. I feel that ‘bhai’ which means the same thing in Hindi is a golden alternative. 

I also think if the stories were longer and more complex it would add more depth and attraction to said story. Specifically I feel that the suspect list should have been longer.

Audience

For younger readers and teenagers

I must express that this book is explicitly written for younger readers, but it also holds charm for teenage readers.
