Terror In The Skies

Heaven on earth,

A peaceful place,

That was the prosperity,

Of the village near the lake.

People passed,

Children laughed,

During war,

There never was a stir.

Nothing could disrupt such bliss, people thought.

But oh, were they so wrong.

For on the eve of spring’s arrival,

There it was, a terror in the skies.

With eyes as venomous as a snake,

and scales like one, too.

The Dragon of the North,

high it flew.

With wings like sails,

of ships on the sea,

It descended its way,

And soon began the ails.

The shadows terrified all

who were brave enough to venture outside.

Never could one hear a child laugh,

as they were trapped inside.

Their homes, like prisoners, they stayed.

The once lively village,

Now felt dead,

Like that, the poison spread.

The birds stopped their morning greetings,

and migrated far to the west.

Every moment was consumed in anxiety and dread,

wondering when hell would descend.

Sheep dwindled,

trees shrivelled,

But soon, oh, began the days of torment,

As the sun seemed to fall on the earth.

The dragon, how high in the air,

was tired of its heavenly abode.

And thus began its hunt,

Rivalling that of Artemis herself.

Houses burnt; people died.

Truly a plight,

with no one ready enough,

To bring an end and make the future bright.

But soon, from the mountains west,

On horseback, a knight arrived.

In shining armour, brightness rivalling the dragon’s blinding scales.

A sword as sharp as its teeth, and a smile truly charming.

He was a fairytale, too good to be true,

but don’t fool yourself.

For he had no clue

how to slay.

Behind his handsome face

and graceful horse

was the biggest coward of the human race.

Like the coward he was,

When all the lights were out,

He fled to the Kingdom of the North.

Taking with him, all food and water.

A prime example of a fool was he,

Lily-livered with no spine.

Who, rather than bandaging a wound,

Would make it worse with a sprinkle of salt.

But such cowardice is never rewarded,

For there is justice.

The knight was banished

and forced to go into exile.

That is what happens when you tell many a lie.

Tired and mad,

the villagers decided that the matter could be solved

only if they took it into their own hands.

They may have had little knowledge or expertise,

but they had courage and hard work.

Something they did not lack.

To put an end to their strife.

Every night when the dragon slept,

they toiled away,

with the moon’s radiance

as their guide.

Over weeks of work,

they created weapons,

never seen by the eyes of humans,

crafted by the hands of commoners.

Like massive arms with the strength of elephants, many,

and traps of utmost quality.

The dragon would be slain and thus end the plight,

only if the people put up a final fight.

And thus raged a war, of seven days and seven nights,

until the horrendous firedrake could fly no more.

He disintegrated into a pile of smoke and ash,

As such, the celebrations began.

In life,

There is no knight in shining armour coming to save the day.

To succeed,

you have to win it your way.
