Response to ‘Crumble’ by Lisa Westberg Peters
Why should I not crumble?
Said the sandstone
I am at sixes and sevens.
Truly woebegone!
Can you ask the wind to stop blowing?
Can you ask the river to stop flowing?
Can you ask the rain to stop pattering?
Can you ask the milk to stop spattering?
Can you ask yourself to stop instructing me?
And behaving as if you are busier than a bee
If you do this,
I will try my best.
To change from a man of straw
To a man of steel
This truly is my heartfelt appeal.
To stop bossing me around
I repeat again, stop bossing me around!
Said the sandstone, with a final sigh!
Let me live, or else I’ll cry.
I contain light within me like a firefly.
After all, everything that crumbles
Is not weak!
There is great strength in being weak.
