His real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and it was Rabindranath Tagore who first referred to him as “Mahatma.”

He grew up in a Hindu family and adhered to a basic vegetarian diet. In South Africa, he led the first peaceful protest movement, setting himself apart from other demonstrators. He introduced the concept of satyagraha and devoted 20 years of his life to battle the discrimination in South Africa.

Gandhi initiated the “khadi movement” to encourage the use of fabrics like khadi or jute. During the fight for India’s freedom, he faced imprisonment several times, along with his followers, his goal always being the freedom of India. Gandhi emphasized the importance of education, cleanliness, health, and equality in society. All these qualities defined him as a person with a great soul, earning him numerous awards.
