How To Come Up With a Story Idea And Write a Story : Step-By-Step Guide For Kids With Examples

Once you have decided to write a story, the first thing you start looking for is an inspiration or idea from which you can kickstart your writing. Developing a story idea is both difficult and exciting. And coming up with the perfect story idea is a daunting task. If you’re in the same situation and don’t know what to write about, you’ve landed on the right page. What is a story idea?

The spark that initiates a narrative is known as a story idea. It’s the basic idea, a seed from which a complete narrative can develop. Every story needs a main concept to move it along. That core is simply expressed in a story idea. The most intriguing narrative concepts arouse our interest and compel us to learn more. They offer a challenge, a conflict, or a reality that needs to be explored.

Why is a story idea important?

A compelling idea draws readers in with its charm and potential like a magnet. It establishes the framework for delving into challenges, developing likable characters, and creating a universe that speaks to readers. A story may lack the direction and focus necessary to fully captivate our imagination if there isn’t this initial spark. 

 How do I come up with a story idea and incorporate it into the story?

STEP 1: Gather Your Favorite Ideas.

The best place to start looking for inspiration is within yourself. Take out a piece of paper and note down the things that excite you. Make a list of 10 to 15 things you love, maybe food, travel, toys, any cartoon characters, or anything such. And slowly cut off the things you are least interested in, and finally you will have a good topic to start with.

STEP 2: Determine Your Writing Style.

Now that you have a topic, ponder whether you want to write a fictional (imaginary) or a real-life story about it. For example, if you have decided to write about toys, consider if you want to write a story in which toys speak and you’re creating an imaginary life and story for them. Or else you can also write about your favorite toy or the best toy you got as a gift.

STEP 3: Refer Writings Related To The Topic.

Once you have come up with a subject, browse for stories, books, or blogs related to the same topic. Think about the different endings or aspects you would add to it if you were writing it. Brainstorm how you would make your writing interesting and appealing to the reader.

STEP 4: Start Mind-Mapping The Plot.

Now note down how you want to start your story: what are the challenges the protagonist goes through, how they overcome them, whether it has a sad or happy ending, what happens in the end, etc. Do not start writing the story right away. It will be easier if you decide how the plot is going to be. Try to be creative with this step. Include different and unique challenges and solutions. Make sure to add something that the readers would least expect.

STEP 5: Start Penning Down!

Once you’re ready with all the aspects, follow the structure of the mind map and pen down your story. Try to describe every possible aspect to enhance the quality of your work. Note down the extra ideas you come across and choose the best ones among them for your work. 

STEP 6: Re-Read Your Work.

It is not enough if you just write your story. It is also very important to recheck and reread your work multiple times and change whatever is necessary. Make sure that the scenes in the story link with each other and make sense. If you feel like some scene or situation is not appropriate or could be better, just do it. 

STEP 7: Ask For Opinions.

This step is completely optional, but it can create a better impact for your story. Ask your friends or family to read your work and give input. Ask them what they liked and did not like about the story. Question if they think there’s anything that would make the work more worth it! And make changes again if you feel their opinion or suggestion is valid. Obviously, you might get negative comments too; just ignore them and be confident about your work. You are doing something that they didn’t, and for sure, you’re growing yourself. 

Bonus Tips:

• Keep the setting of the story relevant to the plot. E.g., a fairy tale story can’t take place in a very dark, gloomy setting.
• Feel free to add in enough characters if needed.
• Try to describe the setting and the characters in a few words. The readers should be able to interpret what kind of personality the character holds.
• Stick to the topic you’ve chosen. Try not to mix a lot of topics and create confusion.
• Instead of directly conveying something, make it descriptive. E.g., if Sam is angry, don’t directly say that ‘Sam was angry’; instead, try to describe what he is doing because he is angry, like shouting, abusing, or hitting.

Start with smaller writings, gradually increasing their length and making the plots authentic and capturing.
