Fable : Turtle And The White Swan

A Stormy Beginning

It was a stormy night. Waves crashed against the shores and a huge tsunami occurred on the small island of Crete. Luckily there were no humans, for its only inhabitants were a family of turtles and a pack of squirrels. On Crete a little baby turtle was born. The turtle was named Brutus but before he could take his first steps the tsunami swept away Brutus’s mother and father into the vast ocean. Brutus was terrified and confused so he hid behind a big rock to find safety and bravery the whole night. By morning his curiosity got the better of him and also, he was starving so he slowly crept outside.

A Swan’s Kindness

Meanwhile a beautiful white swan was hunting for some fish and when she saw Brutus she landed on the island and gently swooped him up. Brutus closed his eyes as he was terrified of heights but the swan kept on flying forward. When they touched down in Cairo the swan enclosed him around her wings and fed him fish.Brutus was soon to learn that her name was Daisy.

A New Life in Cairo

Everyday she kept on caring for Brutus, giving him milk and making sure he got stronger day by day. Years passed and both were happy with each other’s company; the turtle had made many swan friends in Cairo and the swans loved to play with the turtle. Years passed and the turtle had reached adulthood.

Brutus Seeks His Own Kind

Brutus kept on asking Daisy ‘I want to meet people of my kind.’ He pestered Daisy so much that she reluctantly caved in. She dropped Brutus at Crete, nuzzling him. ‘Be careful honey.’ At first Brutus was happy to be with the other turtles splashing around in the water, but he just could not forget Daisy. He kept on thinking about her but Brutus quickly dismissed the thought. Don’t be silly. This is where you belong.’

A Heartbreaking Choice

When Daisy came around for her usual hunting, he begged Daisy to pluck off her feathers so she could stay with him forever. ‘No Brutus. Cairo is where I belong’ she kept on saying. But Brutus kept on persisting and having the motherly love that she does, she finally caved in. Days passed and both of them were happy until a mongoose came. Brutus and the other turtles quickly jumped into the water but Daisy could not fly since she had plucked off her wigs and had tragically died. Brutus kept on blaming himself but he was right; Daisy’s death had been his fault.

Moral

Never change yourself for others.
