Dr. B. R. Ambedkar: Father of the Constitution
On the 75th anniversary of Indian Republic Day, to be celebrated on January 26, 2024, let’s remember the ‘Father of the Constitution,’ Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar. Dr.Ambedkar was born on April 14th, 1891, in the town of Mhow, currently in Madhya Pradesh, India. He was the last child of Ramji Maloji Sakpal and his wife Bhimabai. He excelled in higher education, dedicating himself to advocating for the untouchables and securing their equal freedom. He was a freedom fighter for our country.
While learning about his life, I discovered an incident where Dr. Ambedkar learned about untouchables from his father while studying in America. Despite realizing there was no caste difference there, he chose not to remain silent but returned to India, fighting against untouchability. He led a movement to eradicate untouchability, tirelessly working to provide special privileges to those affected. His dedication persisted until the end.
It was surprising to learn that ‘untouchability’ existed in India, but inspiring to witness Dr. Ambedkar’s fight against it, ensuring justice for the affected. His actions inspire me to contribute to society and raise concerns when witnessing wrongdoing.
Dr. Ambedkar chaired the drafting committee, as a pivotal role in forming the constitution. He drafted the final version of the Indian constitution, earning him the title ‘Father of the Indian Constitution.’
Together with many followers, he embraced Buddhism, citing its three principles: Prajna (understanding against superstition and supranationalism), karuna (love), and samata (equality) as essential for a good and happy life.
Despite health issues, Dr. Ambedkar persisted in his pursuits. On December 3, 1956, he completed his final manuscript, “The Buddha and His Dharma,” and three days later, on December 6, 1956, Dr.Ambedkar peacefully passed away in his sleep at his house in Delhi.
“I like the religion that teaches liberty, equality, and fraternity.” – Dr. B. R. Ambedkar
