Children below 15 should not have Instagram accounts.
Discussion
I disagree with the statement ‘Children below 15 should not have Instagram accounts,’, as even though social media can prove to be harmful and it’s not a requirement for younger children, platforms such as Instagram or YouTube can help teenagers in a positive way.
Children below 15 tend to be more gullible/naïve, but social media helps many children globally with a multitude of reasons. Instagram or Snapchat, for example, can be a place where children can freely socialise as your account (if chosen to be kept private) is only visible to those you know, follow, and those who follow you back.
Global reach
This also allows children to communicate easily with people all around the world. I, sitting in my own home in India, can talk to or message my friend living in Australia.
Many campaigns have also taken place on social media. To mention one, the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge for mental health and suicide prevention. This challenge originally began in 2014 and was revived in 2025, and the original campaign raised over $115 million in just eight weeks. It also helped children below 15 understand these issues in an easier way.
Educational learning
There are also educational videos for children who need extra learning. While I agree there are threats, there is more good spread as we cannot live confined in our own bubbles cut off from the rest of the world.
Thus, I think the government should focus on making laws for more meaningful causes or even just stricter threading on social media.
Conclusion
To conclude, I would like to say education and social media should go hand in hand and even children 15 or younger can utilize important tools well.
