Bhagat Singh: A Hero

Bhagat Singh was born on September 27, 1907. His father, Sardar Kissan Singh, used to follow Gandhi’s protests. When Bhagat Singh was 13, he wanted to join the non-cooperation movement; he got permission to join the non-cooperation movement. But when Gandhi called off the movement, Bhagat was very disappointed. At this time, he openly defied the British and followed Gandhi’s wishes. He burned his government school uniform and books. He did not want to marry as he sought freedom for his country. He soon became a member of the Naujawan Bharat Sabha. His professor wanted him to join the Hindustan Republic Association. The British government created a commission under Sir John Simon. Lala Rajpat Rai did not agree, as there was no Indian in the commission. Lala ji started a protest, but as they encountered the police, the police responded with violence and beat up Lala ji to death. When Bhagat saw this, he got angry and wanted to take revenge. He aimed to kill John Scott. But when he executed the plan, instead of killing John Scott, he killed JP Saunders. He also shaved his beard and cut his hair. The British wanted to make the police more powerful as it was the only way to stop the revolutionaries. In response, Bhagat dropped bombs in the assembly; the plan was fixed, and on April 8, 1929, he dropped bombs in the assembly. But the bombs were made with less power, just to scare the British. Bhagat got arrested. He started a hunger strike. His fast lasted for 63 days. Bhagat was sentenced to death. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat was hanged to death. He was cremated on the banks of the River Sutlej.
