Autobiography of a Passport
I wasn’t born in a hospital like regular people. No, I came to life in a government press, smelling of fresh ink and new beginnings. Navy-blue outfit, golden Ashoka emblem… honestly, I must say I looked quite smart. For a while, I just lay around, blank and clueless. Then came the moment that would change my life: I met my human, Aarav Mehta. His photograph was stuck onto my first page, his details printed neatly beside it, and I was officially his pass to the great world beyond the Mumbai Airport.
Travel
From then on, I went everywhere with him. Stuffed into backpacks, squeezed into pockets, waved nervously at immigration counters. I have seen airports at 3 a.m., watched people sprint to gates, and sat in dusty drawers for months at a time. Life’s unpredictable when you’re a passport. But there is one incident I will never forget. It was Aarav’s first solo trip.
He was in the Dubai airport, panicking because he couldn’t find me. He emptied his bag on the floor—charger, socks, snacks, even a crumpled boarding pass—but no sign of me. His face was anxious and he looked like he was about to cry. Turns out, I’d slipped between the seats at the waiting area. A kind cleaner spotted me, saw the Ashoka emblem, and rushed over just before boarding closed. Aarav grabbed me like I was a long-lost friend. I’ve never felt more important—or more squished.
Moments like that make me realize I’m not just a booklet.
Memories
I’m Aarav’s identity, his ticket to the world, his quiet little partner-in-crime. Of course, I get stamped, smudged, bent, and sometimes forgotten at home, but I’m also the reason he’s seen oceans, mountains, and street markets he still talks about. I know I only get ten years, and one day a newer, shinier passport will take my place. But every visa sticker, every immigration stamp, every nervous airport adventure those memories stay with me forever.
I may be small, but I’ve carried Aarav across borders, through adventures, and sometimes out of trouble. Not bad for a blue book with a golden logo.

That would definitely be the time Aarav thought he lost me at the Dubai airport during his first solo trip. He was panicking and emptied his whole bag!
