Autobiography Of A Rumour By Aanavi
People often compare me to a wildfire, saying that I spread just as fast and maliciously. I ask them not to flatter me because it is just in my nature. In fact, I have often been compared to my siblings; conspiracy, speculation and gossip, for they have always been a bit louder, unruly and more accomplished than me. However, I take pride in being more subtle.
My proudest moment yet, has been when I was able to make the entire 11th grade believe that Ravi had poked his nose in class, trying to be discreet for his own sake but failing miserably at it. My time and place of birth was 8:00am on a Monday morning, to be exact. From the moment that I opened my eyes, or rather, Raj who was Ravi’s arch-nemesis, opened his mouth, I knew that I was special. A once dull and sullen classroom soon came alive with buzz and tittle-tattle. Cheerfully, I pat myself on the back. The entire class broke out into vigorous conversation, looking busy for once like proper students.
Ravi was the typical nerdy, spectacles-wearing boy of the class who had earned a position in the debate team of their school that Raj had desperately wanted. Envious of his flawless resume, Raj decided to poke at the one aspect of Ravi’s life that wasn’t as picture- perfect, and that was his social life at school. A rather pathetic attempt at that, of course. If I were to truly wreak havoc in his life, I would do that by joining forces with and fabricating a completely different narrative with all of my siblings, but that is besides the point. Every time I tried to approach the insolent boy on that day, which was much more often than I ever did with anyone else, he was quick to stoically brush me off. He only looked mildly displeased and unsettled and that bothered me.
My downfall hence began from here. A whisper that could once awaken the dead failed to turn heads. With an ironic twist of fate I seemed to be the one left forgotten, while Ravi was the one spreading the wildfire of indifference throughout the room which led to my end.
