Lord Shiva
Chapter 1: The Fire Pillar
After the universe was created, Lord Vishnu proclaimed, “I am the supreme god of the universe.”
But Lord Brahma disagreed and said, “No, I am the supreme god of the universe.”
A fierce argument broke out between them. As the battle intensified, suddenly, from nowhere, a blazing pillar of fire appeared. From this magnificent flame, Lord Shiva emerged and commanded, “Stop fighting!”
Chapter 2: The Contest
To settle the dispute, Lord Shiva proposed a contest.
He said, “Whoever can find the top or the bottom of this fire pillar shall be considered the supreme god.”
Lord Vishnu transformed into a boar and dug deep to find the bottom.
Lord Brahma turned into a swan and flew high to find the top.
After a long search, Lord Vishnu humbly accepted defeat, unable to find the end.
However, Lord Brahma, though unsuccessful, lied. He claimed he had found the top of the fire pillar and even presented a Ketaki flower as false proof.
Lord Shiva, angered and cursed Lord Brahma:
“You shall not be worshipped on Earth.”
Moral of the Story
Never lie.
Even if a lie seems harmless, the truth will always come to light.
Note
The Ketaki flower (also known as Screwpine or by its botanical name Pandanus odorifer) is a fragrant tropical flower commonly found in India. It has long, spiky leaves and beautiful, aromatic blooms, usually white or pale yellow. Despite its sweet scent, it holds a unique place in Hindu mythology.
Mythological Significance:
In the story mentioned, Lord Brahma used a Ketaki flower as false proof in his lie about finding the top of the fire pillar. Because of this lie, Lord Shiva cursed the Ketaki flower, saying it would never be used in his worship — and to this day, Ketaki is not offered to Shiva in temples.
