Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian I Book Review by Rishav, 11, Kolkata

Book Review : Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian

Over the years, I have read a great many books, such as Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz, and half of the Hardy Boys series written by Franklin W. Dixon. All of these great books are unique, but one cannot remember them by the aspects of character growth, insane twists, and witty humour, along with a thrilling, fast-moving narrative, except of course the Da Vinci Code.

Though there is a book series with all these attributes and an addictive, enjoyable writing style, This is the book series by Percy Jackson. Among all the 5 books in this series, I liked the last one the most, Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian.

This book centres on Percy Jackson, the son of the mythical Poseidon. He receives the Great Prophecy, which says that one demigod’s choice would either destroy the Greek gods or save them. This demigod is suspected to be Percy. He prepares and leads a whole camp of teen demigods to a final confrontation with Kronos, the lord of the evil Titans. During the war, the character of Percy Jackson changes a lot while facing extreme emotional conflict and unbearable trauma from losing friends.

The writing style of Rick Riordan is truly unique. It is always lucid. Though in simple, everyday words, he conveys seriousness and grief when necessary. The smooth flow of the story from Percy’s point of view is wonderfully written. I, personally, could not put the book down once I started reading it and had to force myself to. I cannot stress enough the great simplicity of the narrative, which conveys humour, emotion, trauma, and grief very well.

If this book were made into a movie with the correct visualizations of the characters and events derived exactly from the book with no changes, it would be awesome!

This book is a must-read for all bookworms who are into books with adventure, thrills, and fast-paced narratives. I feel this book is not for a target audience but for anyone who likes themselves. It is a good and exciting read. Fair warning: do read the first and fourth instalments in the Percy Jackson series before reading this one, which is the fifth book, for context, or you may not understand some things. Another thing I should mention is that you do not have to do any prior research on Greek mythology. Rick Riordan’s writing has enough information in it to turn him into a knowledgeable person in the field after reading his books.

All in all, this book meets all my criteria for a good book, and I also enjoyed it extremely. It deserves a 4.5 out of 5. It is applicable to anyone who likes books and adventure.

RATING: – 4.5/5
